does writing on money change the value of it?
i was at an ice-cream store yesterday and i saw they hung up some money with inspirational quotes written on it. i really want to do that to all my one dollar bills so it makes people happy when they get it as change! so i was wondering is this illegal or anything? will stores accept it? and also, what are some good quotes to write on it? somthing along the lines of
“live, love, laugh”
or even just h”have a nice day”
anything that makes you feel good.
thanks soo much!
It doesn’t change the value of paper money, but it is illegal. This is straight from the horses mouth: (The Bureau of Engraving and Printing)
“Defacement of Currency
Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined not more than $100 or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.
Defacement of currency in such a way that it is made unfit for circulation comes under the jurisdiction of the United States Secret Service. Their mailing address is:
United States Secret Service
950 H Street, NW
Washington, DC 20223.
The United States Secret Service web address is http://www.secretservice.gov. ”
So if you decide that it is okay to write on money, you may get a visit from the US Government Secret Service. I guess it’s up to you if writing “Have a good day” on money is worth risking having a Government hammer brought down on your head.
